Conference Announcement

By Connections Oz on October 18, 2026

We have been away from the desk, but are back with good news!

After several years online, Connections Oz will return as an in-person conference in Canberra on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December 2026.

Save the date and share it with colleagues involved in professional wargaming, serious games, simulation, analysis, education and training.

Previously the online delivery enabled Connections Oz to maintain our community, include international speakers and make conference material more widely available. It also demonstrated the value of accessible participation. The 2026 conference will retain a number of remote presentations, which will allow us to hear from regional and international contributors who are unable to travel.

A conference to participate in

The return to an in-person format gives us an opportunity to build professional relationships, exchange candid lessons, and hopefully play some games.

The conference will include:

  • short presentations and chaired conversations;
  • practical workshops;
  • game demonstrations;
  • playable sessions;
  • works-in-progress;
  • project displays;
  • networking;
  • and social gaming.

Newcomers are encouraged. You do not need to be an established wargaming professional to attend or contribute.

Call for presenters, facilitators and game designers

We invite proposals for:

  • 15-minute practice presentations;
  • 50 minute workshops;
  • game demonstrations and project displays;
  • facilitated game sessions; and
  • roundtables and problem labs.

All expressions are welcome. We are looking for contributions that are practical, candid and useful. Lessons from practice, emerging ideas, prototypes and thoughtfully examined failures are all welcome.

Most presenters will be expected to attend in person. A limited number of remote proposals will be considered where they provide distinctive regional or international perspectives that would not otherwise be available.

Proposal enquiries and submissions: connections.oz@gmail.com

Further information about registration, the venue and the conference program will follow.

Save the date 10–11 December 2026, consider what you might contribute, and share this announcement across your professional networks.

We look forward to reconnecting the Australian and regional wargaming community in person.

UNITED24 Media carries an article entitled “Inside Russia’s Secret War Games Where Generals Seized Gotland and Defeated NATO,” reporting  that according to the Dossier Center, a Russian investigative media outlet, published on September 8, Russia’s General Staff had conducted the simulations at the Military Academy of the General Staff, using specialized software to model terrain, military units, weapons, and the actions of opposing forces.

My Personal Tribute to Professor Taizo Yakushiji

 My Personal Tribute to Professor Taizo Yakushiji

This article is a personal tribute to my academic mentor in Japan, Professor Taizo Yakushiji, who passed away on January 9, 2026. It reflects the analytical techniques I learned from him in the early 1990s and demonstrates how I have built upon that foundation in light of recent academic literature.

Abstract

This article revisits the Richardson-type arms race model by introducing a frequency-domain perspective on strategic interaction. Using SIPRI military expenditure data for Japan, the United States, and China from 1990 to 2024, it develops a generalized relative power contribution (RPC) framework that integrates order-invariant identification with time-scale decomposition. The analysis yields three findings. First, low-frequency dynamics exhibit stronger cross-national contributions, indicating structural interdependence alongside domestic institutional constraints, whereas high-frequency dynamics are increasingly dominated by own contributions, reflecting short-run internal adjustment. Second, conventional orthogonalized RPC introduces systematic directional bias due to ordering dependence, particularly by understating China’s influence. Third, bootstrap inference shows that while the qualitative structure of interaction is robust, the magnitude of estimated effects varies across frequencies, especially at higher frequencies. These results suggest that arms competition is better understood as a multi-scale and probabilistic process rather than a single reaction relationship. By providing an order-invariant and frequency-specific measure of contribution, the framework offers a more precise characterization of defense-spending interdependence, with implications for empirical studies of deterrence, strategic interaction, and policy responsiveness in contemporary security environments.
